It’s not every day you take a call from a member of the management team at Westminster Abbey who explains that the Abbey is starting the search for a chair to replace over two thousands seats.

When Chart Area Seating took that call in May 2014 we were both thrilled and acutely aware of the responsibility that comes with working to find the right seating solution for an iconic venue, UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most recognisable buildings in the world which welcomes over one million visitors every year.
Westminster Abbey is a working church holding daily services and alongside this hosts an incredibly diverse range of events and concerts in an ever-evolving roster of activities. From Royal weddings and coronations to services of remembrance to fashion shows - 2016, for the first time in its history the Abbey hosted a fashion show when Gucci presented its 2016 Cruise collection there -  Westminster Abbey has balanced tradition and heritage with a willingness to open its doors and welcome an incredibly diverse range of visitors.
As such the Abbey required a chair which could meet these constantly changing demands.
The chair needed to be:

Robust and durable to cope with the frequent moves, setting-out and clearing (several hundred chairs are set out and then cleared every day)
Stackable with a high density capability as there is no off-site storage available to the Abbey so all chairs are stowed inside the Abbey
Sympathetic to its unique and world-famous surroundings which are regularly shown on televised events broadcast across the globe
Comfortable for services and concerts which can often last for several hours
Unique reflecting the Abbey’s global status

We were immediately confident that our valued and long-standing supply partners Casala were the right manufacturer to work with on this extraordinary project.
We have worked alongside Casala’s talented design and production departments and for eighteen months we have worked closely with Westminster Abbey from the Dean of Westminster, The Very Reverend Dr John Hall to the Visitor Experience department, the porterage team and the restoration experts and Surveyor of the Fabric.
From the first day we have seen incredible engagement from all at Westminster Abbey who have guided us on their requirements.
This has been reflected throughout by the commitment of all at Casala who have made ceaseless efforts to deliver a unique solution befitting this amazing space.
Basing our proposal on Casala’s proven Curvy chair we then re-worked this model to incorporate the special elements required by the Abbey.

Our special version of the chair included:

A special oak stained veneer to complement the unique space
Special acoustic treatments including rubber bumpers to the frame as well as between the frame and the seat and felt pads to the underside of the seat – these measures are designed to reduce noise both during setting-out and stowing of the chairs and while in use
The Westminster Abbey shield has been laser-engraved into the backrest of all 2,200 chairs providing a subtle but indelible link between the chair and the Abbey’s history
Casala’s unique Zifra seat identification system which uses e-ink to allow the user to display various symbols and characters on a display cell elegantly sunk into the timber backrest.  The Zifra system was further customised for the Abbey to provide a greater breadth of characters, symbols and titles reflecting the incredible range of visitors and attendees who will use the chairs throughout their working life in Westminster Abbey
A completely re-designed transport dolly with capacity for three stacks of chairs allowing the Abbey’s staff to move 90 chairs into position in a single journey.  The special transport dolly wheels were equipped with low-noise bearings and soft grip tyres to protect the centuries old Abbey floor
Each transport dolly has been supplied with a fabric cover bearing an embroidered  Westminster Abbey shield ensuring that the chairs blend into their surroundings when not in use to minimise their visual impact as visitors tour the building

On 27th May we delivered 2,200 bespoke chairs to Westminster Abbey along with 21 uniquely designed transport dollies each capable of holding three stacks of chairs and the service agreement will ensure that these chairs will serve the Abbey for the next twenty years and beyond.
